When it’s time to wash your new shirt, you need to take the appropriate steps to avoid damage.
Some of the transfer sheets I got you auto-flipped the transfer sheet and some you don’t. You have to read the instruction on whatever packet you buy. I made shirts like these for friend’s wedding shower as well as shirts to wear to a concert for friends. I had a lot of people comment on how they loved the shirt too. I always found myself buying t-shirts with sayings and whatnot on them. Then it hit me, I can make these all myself and save so much more money.
Printing on Transfer Paper
When printing out your design, the steps you’ll need to take will depend on whether you’re using transfer paper for darker shirts or lighter fabrics. Place your shirt above the pillowcase, and lay them onto a flat surface or ironing board. Set up your iron by following the instructions on the transfer paper. When the iron is hot, iron the shirt until there are no wrinkles.
You need to cut out the body part that you have just finished drawing at this stage. This will help you get the back piece of your t-shirt. You can use this pattern piece to get another identical piece, but you need to cut the neckline a little lower this time.

If you're satisfied with the graphic, move on to the next step below. Else, give it a few more minutes to see if it improves. But beware of overexposing the image as it will make it breed. Make your way back to the room after minutes and carefully peel the transparency. Doing this will expose faint blue lines where your design has been burned into the screen. However, for beginners, we suggest you start with something simple without many thin lines to make your work easy.
For a large A4 design, iron for another 60 seconds and go over every part of the image. For half an A4 sheet, reduce the time to 30 seconds; for a quarter of a sheet, 15 seconds will be enough. In general, transfer paper is divided into light-colored and dark-colored fabrics.
Transfer Printing
Once done, place your cotton underlay on a hard, smooth surface that can withstand heat – an ironing board will not suffice. Turn on your iron and set it to a cotton setting or high temperature. Check the transfer paper packaging for any specific instructions. Place your t-shirt on the cotton underlay and start ironing to get a flat surface. At this point you will want to refer to the paper manufacturer’s instructions for transferring the print.
If so, go back in with your bleach filled brush and even out the design. Use the white chalk to sketch out your design on the shirt. The chalk lines will wash out once you’ve completed the bleach painting. Use a sponge brush to paint on the fabric paint. Only put paint on the spots that have been cut out of the contact paper—the spots that will be painted in dark on the t-shirt.

If possible, ask a friend to hold the screen in place. A 500-watt lightbulb will burn the transparency image into the emulsion in roughly fifteen minutes.The exact times for this process depend on the light and emulsion you use. Place the transparency down backward on the screen. Now you’re ready to burn your image into the emulsion.
After you have printed your design, trim away any excess paper as close to your design as possible, unless you have printed on a laserjet printer using Image Clip Paper. You'll need to discard the paper stencils after washing the screen. This means if you make a couple of the same print, you should make sure you make several stencils at once to cater to all your printing sessions. Pour a small amount of the fabric ink horizontally across the top of your screen. Grab that squeegee and use it to make a single smooth movement across down the screen as you exert strong pressure. Lay the dry screen over the t-shirt with the design sitting where you want to print it.
If you are printing on a light-colored shirt, you will need to mirror the image prior to printing. This is because light transfer paper creates a mirror image on the shirt. In other words, you need to print the design backward in order for it to be the right direction on your shirt. Look for a “mirror” or “reverse” setting in your print options window. If you can’t find it, open your design in an image editing program and flip it.
The idea is to get a thin, even layer across your entire screen. Screw together 2x2s to create a square wooden frame. It doesn't need to be perfect, but make sure it's solid and flat.
Insert the pins straight down via a seam and onto a paper for the sleeve seam. Make sure you keep the pins no further than 1 inch apart. Neckline, insert the pins via a seam joining the back neckline to the collar. The pins you insert on the shoulders, sides, and bottom hem don’t need to be precise since their primary purpose is to hold the shirt. The idea here is to help you make your own clothes. Refine the pattern as per your needs and try again and again.
The emulsion will leak through the screen, so be sure to squeegee both sides of the screen. The color of the emulsion should change from blue to green. There should also be small bubbles forming in the emulsion. Look at how to add fonts to your PC, Illustrator, or Photoshop if necessary.If you’re feeling adventurous with design, you can make your own. Ask friends, family, or coworkers what design and color scheme they like best. Don’t forget you can also use the back of the t-shirt to include a branding slogan (“Just Do It”).
